          Where and how?

It appears this wreck occurred in York Sound and at night. From the videos it appears they hit a reef that was 300m further out than charted.

Easy to claim travelling at night was too risky but travelling during daylight hours, tho’ safer, is not a guarantee if the water is silty. And, with Zone of Confidence C(4) charting.

Would be nice to know exactly where this occurred.

There has been repeated requests from a number of individuals, including myself, through his blog and Facebook for a position of the grounding but all to no avail.

If you check out his FB page theirs plenty of requests there but it seems all he is interested in is putting up old video of past times frolicking with the girls, personally (and unfortunately) i’m starting to have doubts about the “uncharted” part of this saga….

Hi John, I dont like publishing unconfirmed info, but the feedback I’ve received is that the rock is approx 14 47.715S 125 11.186E which is just south of Scott Straight.

Again, unconfirmed, but I think a degree of scepticism needs to be exercised around this issue. Going by the video, there is no doubt the cat got into trouble, but judging from the youtube and the web posts following that, things become a little harder to understand. This is further emphasized by the owners use of the term “dodgy” in his own web site.

Click on the photo below. Not somewhere I’d suggest to be sailing at night.

              Ross.

                Thanks Ross,

Did you get this from Ray of Dog on Cat?

HI there, I lost all my equipment so I don’t have the rock position but I met Ray? on the catamaran “Dog on Cat” who is always in the area. He knows about the rock cos I confirmed it with him. HE has the coords. P

Satellite imagery puts this out from a likely looking reef (see attached), in ZoC D(5) water.

No, I didn’t get it from Ray & Barb. But I know where they are. I’ll try to get in touch with them.

Thanks Ross & Jeff for your efforts,

If that position is correct then you have to wonder what they where doing transiting an unsurveyed area at night, which to my mind nullifies the claim of hitting a uncharted rock as basically nothing is charted in the area, the fact that charts state “unsurveyed” is in fact telling you that hazards exist and are present in the area so is in fact “charted”, it’s just the positions are not known, anyhow i’m pretty sure Plucky now realises this and will be beating himself up over it for a while yet.

Jeff that email is almost word for word what a friend of mine that works for Paspaley received when he asked the question, and like him i had no idea who Ray of the catamaran “Dog on Cat” was so info is all but useless, my friend replied for clarification but as yet has not received an answer, hopefully Ross gets some news…..

From Cruiser Forums about “Long Reef”:

                      “Location: Darwin
Re: Vloggers hit an uncharted rock/reef in the Kimberleys
We were contacted by the Caledonian Sky on 18th August to say they had Peter and Maggie on board and they were docking in Darwin soon. The grounding must have happened about a week prior to that as I believe they spent several days on the cabin roof waiting to be rescued. The area is replete with very large Saltwater crocodiles which are well known for attacking many Cruisers dinghy’s.

It is somewhere on the eastern side of York Sound. I think they were heading for a location known as Rainforest Ravine.

We didn’t get too much detail on location which is understandable while Peter was looking at salvage options. Our understanding is that they had originally intended to anchor near Cape Pond but that was not suitable and so decided to push on to another anchorage but strong tide against them left them short of daylight hours and trying to come into an anchorage at night.

I’m not passing any judgement on the decisions.”

Caledonian Sky left Broome 20/7/17 docked Darwin Saturday 19/8/17.

Thanks Steve seen that thread, Plucky’s a member at CF but hasn’t replied to any questions as yet.

I’ve decided not to get overly concerned with it, just thought it would have been helpful to others if they could mark the location, lots of blank spots up that way so it’s always good when you can fill some in, i’d just hate for some other unfortunate soul to end up in the same situation or worse at the same location.

Was the position ever confirmed ?

Not aware that anyone has confirmed the rock possi. But I saw the wreck on a beach in that area about 4 years ago. Possibly still there. My thoughts – don’t sail at night in the KC close to shore unless you know the area or you’re following a previous safe track. Even then, you have logs and whales that you can’t see.

                            Cheers, Ross

Ok thanks , yeah we are very cautious mariners, I was just wondering if Plucky ever confirmed , he was using his IPad with Navigation so he would have has the mark ,

I was there in July 2022 I marked the end of the reef gave the lat and long to Bar of Dog on Cat and she sent it off to the Australian hydrographic authorities

it has about 500 mil of water over it at low tide

you might want to double check those coordinates – possible typo?

The dotted lines indicate the reef edge ?
